Transforming Government since 2001
The government has confirmed it has no plans to roll-out telehealth to prisons, despite promises to roll the technology out to millions of homes in a bid to improve health services save huge sums for the NHS.

Questioned on potential savings that could be made by using telemedicine technologies in prisons, care services minister Paul Burstow said the government had made no assessment of how much they could save.

And despite confirming that it was ultimately down to primary care trusts and prison partnerships to decide on whether to use telemedicine, Burstow said the government did not "currently plan to promote the use of this technology within prisons".

More widely the government has made major pledges for the widespread rollout of telehealth systems across the country.

Ministers expect the technology, which allows clinicians to monitor health conditions remotely, to save the NHS £1.2bn a year, with the technology improving the lives of patients and reducing hospital admissions.
