Transforming Government since 2001
Welsh Assembly Government Finance and Public Services Minister, Sue Essex has urged public services across Wales to make better use of electronic procurement.

Speaking at a Value Wales workshop with representatives from public sector organisations across Wales Sue Essex explained that developing smarter procurement practices across the public sector is a top priority for the Assembly Government.

"Smarter procurement is essential in our drive to improve front line public services. Only by improving our efficiency and service delivery can we achieve true value for money and ensure that public money is spent wisely.

"Value Wales is working well towards its goal of acting as a catalyst to deliver £120m a year in procurement related savings by 2008. Electronic procurement is gathering pace in the public sector and has achieved tangible results.

"We are already making significant use of the national procurement website and are employing latest tools such as e-tendering and e-Auctions. E-auctions alone have delivered over £3million worth of cashable savings with the Welsh Purchasing Card scheme adding a further £3.8million in process savings.

"There are also good examples of NHS, local authority and higher education bodies successfully reducing their prices and administration costs through the use of e-procurement.

"The benefits are clear. The challenge we now face is to spread this good practice across the whole of the public sector in Wales. By working together the Welsh public sector can achieve economies of scale and deliver better quality public services."
