An IT industry council made up of senior executives will attempt to ensure that suppliers can respond to the new e-government strategy

The Senior IT Forum, which was set up to encourage dialogue between Whitehall and its technology suppliers in order to tackle project failures, is not to be scrapped but will be "complemented" by a council of key industry representatives, it has emerged.

Despite reports that the Forum was to be disbanded following the publication of the e-government strategy, Intellect, the IT industry association, insisted that it will continue alongside the new Public Sector Council.

The council, which is due to have its first meeting before the end of the year ahead of the Forum's next session, will be made up of "representatives of key suppliers", Government Computing News was told on 2 November 2005.

Nick Kalisperas, public sector director for Intellect, said the new body has been created to mirror Whitehall's Chief Information Officers' council.

"Just like the government needs to address its own IT community, so the industry needs to collectively engage and to foster a more proactive intense relationship with the public sector," he said. "From our point of view this body strengthens the relationship with the public sector, rather than weakening it."

Intellect director general John Higgins said that the council will look to take forward the industry's response to the strategy.

"Over the coming months the Public Sector Council will work to impress on the eGovernment Unit the need for government customers to demonstrate fairness, understanding and proportionality on matters that are of key importance to commercial companies.

To develop a more intelligent customer capability, and to continue to build a closer relationship with Industry through Intellect's IT Supplier Code of Best Practice and Intellect's Concept Viability service, we believe that the Public Sector Council will create a seamless communication process between Industry and government, and in parallel with the continuing work of the Senior IT Forum we believe that long term, positive change can be achieved."

The first meeting of the council is scheduled for January 2006.
