Costa Rica's ministry of science, technology and telecommunications (Micitt) announced that it would unveil two new smart city pilots before 2021, according to its national plan of science, technology and innovation.
These two prototypes will run alongside the two smart regions announced by the deputy minister for telecommunications, Allan Ruiz, which could be completed before 2018.
It is still unknown which two cities could become smart, but there are already two projects in the works in Liberia and Alajuela, focused on sustainability and tracking of energy use. logo-bna E-mail Start a Free Trial
Costa Rica is taking strides towards becoming a full digital nation. The country started working towards establishing an e-government in 2012 with the creation of a digital government ministry, now part of the communications ministry. In the past two years, the country has set up online systems for business registration, foreign trade and pension management.
The country ranked 54 out of 193 countries in the UN report, E-Government for the Future We Want, in 2014, up from 77th place in 2012.
The country was praised by the OECD for its advances in e-government in December, according to a press release published by Micitt.
