Tele-Medicine center of India’s information technology initiative, Pan-African e-network, was inaugurated in Addis Ababa yesterday at the Africa Union headquarters.

Indian Minister of State for External Affairs, Dr. Shashi Tharoor, said while inaugurating the center that India is keen to work in partnership with AU in expanding ICT facilities in the continent.

Chairperson of the Africa Union Commission, Jean Ping, on his part said the project has illustrated the strong relation India has with Africa countries, further underlining its contribution to bring sustainable socio-economic development in all African countries.

The Pan Africa e-Network Project was first launched in July 2007. The network will consist of five regional universities, 53 learning centers, five regional supper Specialties Hospitals (SSHs) and 53 remote hospitals in all countries of Africa.

The network will be connected by a satellite/fiber optical network to provide tele-medicine, tele-education and VVIP connectivity among countries.

The project is connected to 47 African countries including Ethiopia and will enable provide integrated service to universities as well as supper specialty hospitals. Ethiopia is the first beneficiary of the project in Africa under a pilot project, which is already in operation.
