The Government, through the Ministry of Information and Technology, has embarked on key policy initiatives for ICT sector to focus on digital transformation.
Secretary of ICT Department Steven Matainaho, representing his minister Timothy Masiu, said that under the theme for this year’s World Telecommunication and Information Society Day “Accelerating Digital Transformation in Challenging Times”, ICT is a very unique tool to PNG.
He said that, as policy makers, regulators and partners in the ICT industry, they should check if digital transformation is taking place in PNG and is PNG ready for digital transformation.
Mr Masiu, in a statement, said the Government has adopted a PNG Digital Transformation Policy last year that now provides a clean path for a holistic approach towards using digital technologies across all sectors.
He said that, the policy has triggered the restructuring of the Department of ICT to be the lead agency to facilitate and coordinate the digital economy agenda for the country.
“To give effect to the PNG digital transformation policy objective, the digital government bill is now being developed and has been released for public consultation. Once enacted in Parliament, the Act will empower the department of ICT to lead and guide digital transformation activities within the public sector, ensuring cost efficiencies for government as a consumer of ICT Services to protect critical national digital infrastructure including data and transitioning government public services to the online space,” Mr Masiu said.
He added that to focus on digital transformation, it is a timely call for us as we live through an unprecedented time when the use of ICT and the internet are indispensable to stay connected and informed in a post COVID-19 world.
