Zambia plans to establish smart city projects in the major towns of the country, inspired by the Chinese model.

This is among the key takeaways of the just-concluded tour by a delegation to China, comprising officials of the governing United Party for National Development (UPND).

The visit followed an invitation by the Communist Party of China (CPC).

Batuke Imenda, the UPND Secretary General, led the delegation that arrived this past weekend from the Asian global technology and economic powerhouse.

“Zambia will pilot smart city projects in Lusaka, Ndola, Kitwe and Livingstone, and pursue decentralisation reforms, drawing from China’s local governance model,” he said.

He added, through partnerships with China, Zambia will pursue technology transfer in agriculture, including smart irrigation and biotechnology.

The focus will be on empowering small-scale farmers in the Southern African country.

China has also pledged to fast-track the development of solar power plants in Zambia to address the latter’s electricity challenges, and support the green energy transition.

The smart city ambitions will be built on the “smart village” concept.

In 2024, the Zambian government and Huawei Technologies signed a partnership to construct 100 “smart villages” in Zambia.

The first project was launched in Namwala district, south of the country, last July.

President Hakainde Hichilema launched the project, which is to be expanded to villages in all ten provinces.
