Transforming Government since 2001
Ndola central member of Parliament Fackson Shamenda says government is committed to implementing projects that will improve Information Communication Technology (ICT) in schools as it raises educational standards in the country.

Mr Shamenda said the introduction of ICTs in schools is a sign that the world is evolving and therefore the need for children to be exposed to new technologies.

“The world is now highly dependent on technology, so it is important that children are introduced to these things at an early stage,” he said.

Mr Shamenda, who is also Minister of Labour, said this in Ndola on Wednesday when Airtel Zambia donated computers and desks worth K60 million to Twapia,Chibolele and Nkwazi basic schools.

He said the computers will help to improve provision of quality education through research.

Mr Shamenda has since advised teachers and pupils at the three basic schools against abusing the computers by using social networks such as facebook and twitter.

“I have heard how the use of such sites destroys the lives of our children because that is where they meet all sorts of people who corrupt their morals. So please desist from such vices and use the computers for the intended purposes,” Mr Shamenda said.

And Airtel Zambia managing director Fayaz King said ICTs are essential tools for fulfilling children’s right to education, the reason why the mobile service provider is working to help raise ICT standards in Zambia.

Mr King said access to computers and internet has expanded hence the need for both adults and youths to use computers as catalysts for personal and business advancement.

“No child should be denied the right to education because it is a human right, hence our pride in investing in the future of Africa by supporting institutions of learning through our corporate social responsibility initiative that has seen billions of Kwacha poured into the education sector across Africa,” he said.

Mr King also said Airtel will give laptops to headmasters at the three basic schools while a selected number of teachers will be given smart phones.
