Transforming Government since 2001

Minister of Information, Communications, Technology and Civic Education Patricia Kaliati says the internet programme which government established through the Regional Communication Infrastructure Programme (RCIP) was aimed at assisting government offices ease communication.

Kaliati made the remarks Friday when she visited Mchinji District Council offices on her familiarisation tour of the RCIP programme which is being implemented through the E-government department.

"We want the district councils and other government offices to utilise the internet to communicate and keep vital data of information and documents; [previously] documents with vital information could sometimes get lost," she said.

She also said the internet has eased communication between departments at the district to their ministry headquarters without incurring more costs.

Kaliati said before, the internet programme communication in government departments was slow hence leading to delays of work.

In her remarks, Human Resources management officer for Mchinji District Council Sellina Chimphamba applauded government for connecting internet at the council.

"Before the establishment of the internet we had problems as a council to access internet, because internet tariffs by other internet providers were expensive and we spent a lot of money on internet alone," she said

Cable and Network manager for SimbaNet, a company which is proving the internet connectivity in the country, Mark Chikoko said the internet is reliable because it is connected to its base in the United Kingdom through Zambia and Tanzania.

"We have the virtual landing Point (VLP) at Capital hill in Lilongwe that provides the ISP to the district council, making it the fastest network and reliable," he said.

So far the internet at the district council is used by the agriculture, water departments and the hospital.

RCIP is a migration from use of satellite to fiber-optic in internet use with the aim to improve efficiency, quality and reduce costs.
