Government has appreciated Information and Communication Technology (ICT) as the “backbone” of highly developed countries and has thus promised to consider employing computer science graduates in strategic government ministries.

Principal Secretary (PS) in the Ministry of Information, Tourism, Culture and Civic education made the assertion in Lilongwe Friday where she presided over projects presentation symposium by final year Bachelor of Computer Science students of University of Malawi’s Chancellor College (Chanco).

Vice President Khumbo Kachali on Wednesday challenged ICT experts to find solutions to curb the growing computer-generated fraud such as the infamous cash-gate episode.

Kachali made the challenge in Lilongwe as he officially launched the National Broadcasting Policy and the National ICT Policy at the end of ICT Week which commenced on Monday, bringing together experts in the area of Information, Communication and Technology.

Malawi has finished drafting new Information and Communications Technology (ICT) Bill expected to completely overhaul its approach to this new technological phenomenon.

The final draft of the ‘Electronic Transactions and Management Bill 2013’ which BiztechAfrica has seen, encompasses eleven issues that will fill the gaps that have been haunting operations in Malawi’s ICT sector.

In the order of presentation in the Bill, issues tackled include the Legal recognition of electronic messages; Proceedings applicable to the conclusion of electronic contracts; Legal responsibility of various actors; Consumer protection with respect to e-commerce; Taxation; Online financial services; and Encryption.

Forum for African Women Educationalists in Malawi (Fawema) has started applying use of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in primary schools to improve quality in provision of basic education.

Under the project Connect for Change, Fawema is establishing ICT laboratories in primary schools and Teachers Training Colleges as well as applying a mobile phone SMS set-up system to connect with communities.

The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) is still fascinated by the story of Sara Maunda, a Malawian village farmer who lives in Dowa, 38-kilometres away from Capital City Lilongwe, whose life was completely transformed when she embraced modern cellular communication technology.

During an opening ceremony of Umodzi Consulting –Esoko stakeholders’ forum in Lilongwe last week, agricultural officer for USAID Mathews Raboin once again referred to Maunda, whose life changed in June 2011 when she started using a cell phone to get prices for commodities.
