The site was official launched today by the secretary in the prime minister’s office, Fred Ganate and UNESCO’s Advisor, Information and Communication for the Pacific Region based in Apia, Samoa, Abel Caine.
“The Solomon Islands was one of the few Pacific countries that had no official government website. We are delighted that this has now changed,” Mr Ganate said.
He said the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet through the Government Communications Unit will be in charge of the overall maintenance of the website.
“As rural and provincial links are developed and internet access generally increases in the country the audiences will change and the ICT facilities will provide a greater focus for the development of e-Government with the delivery of online services and the means by which the local people can be better informed of and consulted about important public policy issues.”
UNESCO representative, Mr Caine said his organization was proud to be able to assist the Solomon Islands Government to set up its official website.
“This is the first government website in the Pacific which UNESCO has been able to assist and we committed to assisting the Solomon Islands Government in this post-conflict period,” Mr Caine said.
