Inaugurating a two-day conference on 'Mobile Technology for Smart Society' organised by the Computer Association of Nepal (CAN) here today, Minister Jha said increase in use of mobile computing raises few issues in terms of regulatory, social and security perspectives, which needs to be addressed.
Stating that mobile technologies enable geographically distributed users to access information and services anytime and everywhere, he expressed the belief that the workshop would draw a conclusion for making m-banking, m-government, m-education and m-health services more effective in the country.
Similarly, Secretary at the Ministry, Som Lal Subedi, said that the countries using, developing and expanding science and technology have been able to achieve prosperity in a short period as the 21st century is the era of science and information technology.
Subedi expressed the view that all the service provider organisations should pay attention toward providing quality services and not use Nepal as a laboratory of testing technologies.
CAN Chairperson Binod Dhakal, renowned personality in the field of mobile technology Dr. Madan Mohan Rao, and Sudhir Parajuli of Subisu Cable Net Pvt. Ltd said that the conference has been organised with the objective of exerting pressure on the government for formulating m-government policy and creating public awareness on the latest mobile technology.
Experts in the field of mobile computing suggest that the government should move ahead by formulating an m-government policy as the e-government policy implemented by the government in 2006 proved ineffective.
Various kinds of services including citizenship certificate, passport could be fill up while air tickets as well as tickets of train and bus can be booked and purchased through the use of mobile technology, they said.
Representatives of ministries concerned with information and technology, its subordinate bodies, telephone and internet service providers and policy makers are participating in the conference.
Telecom experts from Bangladesh and Pakistan are also participating in the conference.
The CAN has been organising such conference every year since 2002.
