Transforming Government since 2001
The telemedicine service initiated by the government at the Patan Hospital, Lalitpur, targeting the people of rural parts in the country has been effective.

According to the hospital source, the service has been beneficial for the people of 25 districts in the mountainous and hilly regions.

The service has proved a great relief to the rural people who have been deprived of health facilities due to many reasons including the lack of resources, said Dr Kamal Raj Dhital.

One doctor among those assigned for the emergency duty at the hospital provides the service, said hospital´s public health supervisor Bimal Gautam.

Any people from any places in the country can dial toll free No. 1660-01- 23455 from the land line and mobile phone for the service, it is learnt.

Store and Forward system and Video Talk are other methods for providing health facilities to the people under the telemedicine service.

Under the Store and Forward method, health professionals in the district hospitals fill up the e-forms mentioning the details of patient ( present condition, symptoms, report and treatment s/he is receiving and forward to the hospital website. After studying the forms, health specialists here inform them about the method of treatment.

Video call is a method in which doctors treat the patients with a help of a screen installed at the telemedicine service room.

This method which is based on doctor-patient dialogue is more effective than the other two and is accessible for only three districts - Solukhumbu, Darchula and Sindhupalchowk.

However, the service which is especially focused on the study of the symptoms of the diseases is not sufficient regarding the diseases of serious nature.

The service was started in 2066 BS and preparations are underway to expand it to all the 75 districts, according to Mr Gautam.

Besides Lalitpur, the service is available to some remote districts including, Achham, Bajura, Darchula, Dolpa, Humla, Sankhuwasabha, Solukhumbu and Taplejung.
