The installation of the stations, equipped with touch screens and printers, is the first step towards the promotion and implementation of e-governance, said Alphonse Zigira, the Rwanda Information Technology Authority's (RITA's) director of rural community access.
RITA will aid government institutions in loading the kiosks with information so that service seekers will be able to access public information, check e-mail and surf the Web.
"The phase of extending the technology to communities in villages will be accompanied by trainings on how the communities should use the kiosks," Zigira revealed.
Funding for the project came from the World Bank, which gave the Rwanda government US$24 million in October for communication infrastructure development and e-governance promotion.
