Foreigners wishing to visit or reside in Tanzania can now apply online for the relevant documents from anywhere around the world
The government yesterday introduced electronic visa and residence permit services for foreign nationals wishing to visit or live in Tanzania, billed to enhance efficiency and boost security as well as revenue collection.
Speaking during the official launch at the Julius Nyerere International Conference Centre in Dar es Salaam, Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa described the move as part of government efforts to ease access of foreign nationals to the country and thereby promote investment especially in the industrial sector.
The premier urged beneficiaries of the new e-documents to strictly abide by the laws of the country and conditions of their visit or residence, according to a statement from his office availed to the media yesterday.
The e-immigration service started immediately after the launch, meaning all foreigners wishing to visit or reside in Tanzania can make such applications online from all corners of the globe.
Majaliwa said the aim of the services is to remove unnecessary bureaucracy and consequent delays that foreigners travelling to Tanzania have had to grapple with, and to enhance security within the country.
He said the decision to go electronic is in line with the government’s policy to adopt information and communication technology in all its operations, popularly dubbed e-government.
The switch to e-immigration is also expected to boost state revenue as all related fees will be paid by applicants electronically through the government’s e-payment system.
“All immigration officers and employees of the immigration department must take care of the new system and its infrastructure,” the statement quoted the premier as saying.
He added that the introduction of the technology is part of the government’s commitment to deliver the right services to both Tanzanian citizens and foreign nationals visiting the country.
Majaliwa further challenged employees of the immigration department to ensure that despite the use of the new technology, all laws, rules and regulations governing visitor or residence permit conditions are observed to the letter.
The new e-immigration system will be connected to other key government systems such as the Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA), Business Registration and Licensing Authority (BRELA), Prime Minister’s Office (labour department), Tanzania Investment Centre (TIC), and the Government e-Payment Gateway (GePG) for proper harmonization.
