Dr Shein made the remark yesterday at the launch of ‘e-Government’ project which has cost 19m USD at Mazizini as part of the celebrations to mark 49 years of Revolution in Zanzibar.
He said the aim of the government is to see specialist doctors provide treatment and screening services by collaborating with their colleagues abroad by using the technology.
“If our plans are well completed, our doctors will be able to connect with other doctors outside the country and carry out surgeries by collaborating with them while in the country,” Dr Shein said.
He said the project will be a catalyst in speeding up development in Zanzibar as the government will reduce the cost incurred when people go for treatments abroad.
He however said that the government is planning on providing primary and secondary education by using the information and communication technology under T21 project sponsored by the US government.
President Shein said the project will be useful to the majority of youth in overcoming the emerging challenges facing the communication and information technology in Zanzibar.
He said the network will also help the government’s intention of strengthening and developing public services and build the basis of good governance.
“The government institutions will be linked to the communication network of e-Government to ensure accountability and provide services to wananchi on the right time,” he said.
He however called upon public servants and investors to use the technology and prepare workers to adapt the technological changes.
“The aim of bringing this project can not be achieved if workers will not be ready to change …we are supposed to be flexible by observing new procedures when executing our duties,” said the president.
Dr Shein said the aim of bringing the project is to ensure that the government conducts its activities in modernised ways and people access them in time.
The celebrations to mark 49 years of revolution are expected to reach their climax on January 12 where the Zanzibar President will inspect the guard of honour before addressing the nation at Amani stadium in the Isles.
