Experts on ICT at a workshop underscored the need for adopting some key elements to ensure, secure and authenticate the online based activities in the country.

They discussed about digital signature, digital certificate and public-key infrastructure (PKI) which are key elements for promoting e-procurement, e-transaction, e-commerce, online income tax return and confidential data transfer.

Controller of Certifying Authority arranged the workshop on e-Governance and Digital Signiture at the auditorium of Bangladesh Computer Council on Monday. The workshop was divided into two parts-inaugural and technical.

In the technical session, three papers were presented by an official of Digital Certifying Authority Samiran Chokraborty, Hasan T Ahmed of Mango Teleservices Ltd and Masudur Rahman of Dohatec CA.

Samiran Chokraborty said digital signature must authenticate the message or document so as to ensure its integrity and detect any tampering. He also said it must authenticate the signatory so as to verify identity even (particularly) in absence of the signatory.

Mr Chokraborty mentioned that at present people are not able to send online applications due to digital signature problem.

Hasan T Ahmed discussed on PKI that is a set of hardware, software, people, policies, and procedures needed to create, manage, distribute, use, store, and revoke digital certificates.

Dohatec official Masudur Rahman in his presentation mentioned about national e-service system.

Dohatec is authorised to issue digital eertificates throughout Bangladesh as the government has introduced digital certificates in the country to reach the objectives of security, e-Commerce and paperless government.
