Telecommunications experts have showed that fatality rate is less in those countries that use modern tools in their road management system.
The Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) organised the seminar at the Bangabandhu International Conference Centre marking the World Telecommunication and Information Society Day (WTISD).
As a member of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), Bangladesh organised different programmes including seminars, rallies and road show to observe the World Telecommunications Day 2013.
BTRC director (system and service) Colonel Rakibul Hasan gave a presentation on 'The impact of ICT on modern communication system'.
He showed the fatality rate is lower in high income countries while the rate is alarming in low income countries as ICT tools are not used in road management system.
He said every year about 3,000 people are killed in Bangladesh, according to the Accident Research Institute. However, the number is nearly 12,000, other sources say.
General Secretary of the Association of Mobile Telecom Operators of Bangladesh (AMTOB) TIM Nurul Kabir was the keynote speaker. He said the financial loss from road accidents in Bangladesh is equivalent to 2 to 3 per cent of Gross Domestic Product (GDP).
The theme of the WTISD 2013 is "ICTs and improving road safety." The purpose of WTISD was to raise awareness of the possibilities the use of the Internet and other information and communication technologies (ICT) can offer to societies and economies, as well as to bridge the digital divide.
