Industry insiders said it is a 'breakthrough' for the ICT (information communication technology) sector development which has been facing problems for long due to dependence on the lone submarine cable -- SEA-ME-WE-4.
"Now the foreign investors will show their interest to invest in the country's ICT sector thanks to ensuring of its back-up," said ISPAB (Internet Service Provider Association of Bangladesh) Vice-President Sumon Ahmed Sabbir.
He expressed hope that the ICT relevant business would get a greater pace from now on.
The IT expert also said the country has got a shape relating to international connectivity, but its local infrastructure is very poor.
"We need to do more to spread ICT across the country to avail its full benefit," he added.
Internet is the key factor for the BPO (Business Processing Outsourcing) business that is yet to blossom in the country for the lack of the proper infrastructure.
But our neighbouring country India and Sri Lanka are much more advanced in this sector and contributing a significant amount of foreign currency to their economies.
President of Bangladesh Association of Call and Outsourcing (BACCO) Ahmadul Hoq said the country has potential possibility to earn huge foreign currency from global BPO market.
But proper infrastructure is required to satisfy the giant companies of the world to get their work, he added.
At present, one underwater submarine cable and six ITC operators are connected with international information super highway, and the country has about 16,000 fibre optic cable lines across the country.
The capacity of the underwater submarine cable is 85 Gbps and the country consumes only 26 Gbps for voice and data service, according to the Bangladesh Submarine Cable Company Limited (BSCCL).
Six mobile operators, two wimax operators, more than one hundred ISP operators are giving internet service to some 30 million people.
The six ITC operators -- Novocom Ltd, Asis-AHL JV, BD Link Communication Ltd, Mango Teleservices Ltd, Summit Communications Ltd and Fibre@home Ltd -- will launch their service commercially by the end of this month.
The government brought down bandwidth price from Tk 12,000 to Tk 8,000 per Mbp in September this year.
