“You have a great role to play for building a digital Bangladesh and your opinion and work plan would be evaluated properly in this regard,” she said while inaugurating a four-day BCS Digital Expo-2010 at Sheraton Hotel here this morning.
Welcoming the foreign guests participating the exposition including the President of Asian-Oceanian Computing Industry Organisation (ASOCIO), Sheikh Hasina called upon them to invest in Bangladesh’s ICT sector and providing all out support for expansion of the sector.
Detailing her government’s vision to build a digital Bangladesh by 2021, she said the main objective of ICT-based technologically advanced Bangladesh is to bringing transparency and accountability in the administration, protect the country from corruption and reaching services to the doorsteps of people.
Listing her government’s programmes towards building a digital Bangladesh, she said it has taken massive programmes to bring all union parishad offices under fibre optic network for introducing improved communications system in rural Bangladesh.
“Initially, 100 union parishad offices have been selected for connecting those with fibre optic network while more 1,000 union parishads would be brought under the network to this end within the next one year,” she said.
The Prime Minister said her government has taken steps to include Information Technology in secondary and higher secondary stage syllabuses for building human resources in the IT sector. Besides, computer labs would be set up in each educational institution with internet facilities in phases.
She said her government has already approved ICT Policy-2009 and formulated ICT Act-2009 to expedite the process in flourishing ICT industry in the country. She said steps have been taken to provide modern video conferencing facilities connecting cabinet, all 64 deputy commissioners, seven divisional commissioners offices with the Prime Minister’s office to facilitate communications among them.
Sheikh Hasina said necessary infrastructures are being built to set up Hi-Tech Park in Gazipur along with strengthening telecommunications network to bring the entire country into e-Governance.
In this context, she said her government has a plan to set up “e-Centre for rural community” at 8,500 post offices in different parts across the country while three hill districts have been brought under telecommunications and internet facilities.
The Prime Minister mentioned her previous government’s steps to break the monopoly in mobile phone sector and waived all taxes of computer equipments so that people of the country can avail the facilities.
Among others, Finance Minister A M A Muhith, Commerce Minister Lt. Col (Rtd) Faruk Khan, State Minister for Science and ICT Architect Yeafez Osman, President of Asian- Oceanian Computing Industry Organisation (ASOCIO) Looi Kien Leong and Managing Director of Axiata (Bangladesh) Ltd Michael Kuehner also addressed the function with President of Bangladesh Computer Samity Mustafa Jabbar in the chair.
Later, the Prime Minister went round of different stalls eructed in the hotel premises. A total of 45 exhibitors are displaying their products, services and applications at 42 stalls and 20 pavilions at BCS Digital Expo-2010.
