Transforming Government since 2001
The computerization of archives and records management processes dubbed National Archives and Records Management System (NARMS) by Ministry of Youth Sport and Culture, is said to be at phase one where it is piloted at the Office of the President and the Botswana National Archives and Records Management headquarters.

The system, which costs the government P32 million, is expected to be completed in September 2010.

By September 2010 phases one and two are expected to be completed. According to the Secure Data Project Manger, Mr Steve Parrymore, they will rollout the programme to other ministries and departments in the third and final phase.

Phase two of the project covers the Ministry of Youth, Sport and Culture, the Ministry of Labour and Home Affairs, the Department of Primary Education and the Department of Water Affairs.

After the completion of phase two, stage three will begin. In the third stage the project will be rolled out to other ministries and government departments.

Secure Data Content, a South African company with two local subcontractors, is the mastermind of the project and has indicated that the system will make information easily accessible.

They were awarded the tender in July 2007.

The solution uses Trim Context Software developed by Tower Software, an Australian company.

Endorsing the project, Deputy permanent secretary in the Ministry of Youth, Sport and Culture, Mr Mothusi Nkgowe said of the project "includes the development, implementation, and monitoring of standards, policies, procedures, processes and the use of tools to enable efficient and effective management of government information and records." Mr Nkgowe further said that even though ministries have different mandates, the records management system has elements and procedures that are applicable to all organizations regardless of function.

This project is in line with the efforts by the government to strive for e-governance.
