The statement came from Electronic Information Center of the Communication and Information Technology Ministry.
'The project is being considered by ministries and state agencies of the country. The work as part of the project will start after relevant rules and procedures for issuance of new generation passports are designed. The current identity cards in Azerbaijan indicate eye color, height and blood type while there are more than 30 types of biometric indicators in world practice.
The key task of all agencies including Interior Ministry, Justice Ministry, law enforcement agencies as well as agencies involved in application of biometric identification system is to speed up implementation of this program as much as possible. The project is planned to be implemented by 2012,' the statement says.
Under the project, centers to individualize new generation passports will be created in Azerbaijan. A database will be created and biometric data will be stored in an electronic chip.
