The Communication Commission of Kenya is rolling out pilot ICT projects in marginalised and remote areas ahead of its upcoming universal access mandate.

The Information minister Samuel Poghisio last month gazetted the Universal Service Fund board. The fund will be administered and managed by CCK.

All companies in the communication sector will con- tribute 0.5 per cent of their revenue to the fund for ICT development in marginalised areas that they deem economically unviable to invest in.

CCK has initiated ICT center pilot projects in secondary schools, grass root com- munity groups, schools for persons with disability and set up libraries in parts of Isiolo, Taita Taveta and Kajiado.

"The overarching objective of the projects is to provide useful lessons on ICT capacity building projects targeted at communities based in rural and periurban impoverished areas," reads a CCK project paper released yesterday.

The projects are targeted to reach up to 300,000 people. "Through the projects, the Commission sought to assess the extent to which interventions of this nature deepen access to affordable communication services and build ICT capacity among students and communities in the selected areas," CCK said.

CCK director general Francis Wangusi had said com- munication sector players may have to start contributing part of their revenues in July.
