Software for the IPRS as well for the identity and verification systems has been developed by Ukrainian identification technology, EDAPS, which specializes in the implementation of large-scale government and corporate projects including identification and biometrics.
According to the Minister for Immigration and Registration of Persons of Kenya Gerald Otieno Kadzhvanga, the introduction of biometric verification and production of electronic ID cards to the country will be beneficial for curbing crime, terrorism and human trafficking, and will as well improve the delivery of government services to citizens of Kenya.
Kenya has a population of approximately 43 million people and is currently in the process of preparing for the country’s first election using biometric voter verification devices, though at last count, only 11 million people had registered biometrics.
As reported previously in BiometricUpdate.com, the national deadline to register biometrics for the country’s upcoming general election in March has recently passed and saw many Kenyans rush to register their information following news that the biometric data in the voter registry would not be shared with law enforcement agencies.
