The National Information Technology Authority (NITA) Uganda awarded the best online government bodies in the e-government excellence awards. The ceremony, held under the theme “Bold Digital Government: Unlocking Service Delivery”, was geared towards commending the government agencies that have actively promoted the provision of services to citizens online.
The event was organized by Legends events and hospitality and was part of NITA-U’s month-long celebration that the Authority put up marking 10 years since its inception. The awards attracted over 75 nominations under various categories in which 16 awards were delivered.
Under the outstanding web-portals, Makerere University emerged the best under the connected category; Uganda National Bureau of Standards was voted to have the most interactive portal; the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions is the most informative portal; while Mbarara District took home the nod for the best local government portal.
For the best e-service sectors, UNRA’s PDU e-Transit Ladder emerged top under Economic Infrastructure & Competitiveness; eBiz by Uganda Revenue Authority was voted best in Tourism & Trade Sector; UNEB’s E-Registration portal emerged best in Education; and the Health sector was won by Smart Care of the National Medical Stores.
The Integrated Financial Management System (Ifms) from Ministry Of Finance won the Accountability & Governance Sector; eLogRev from Ministry Of Local Government emerged best in Public Administration & Management; while the Justice Law & Order Sector was taken by Business Registration System from the Uganda Registration Services Bureau.
Uganda Revenue Authority was voted to be the best Exhibitor at the e-Government Expo 2019; NSSF was voted to be the best Government Entity Of The Year 2019; URA’s eTax emerged as the Citizen’s top choice; while the CIO of the year is Martin Ssekajja, the Head of Information Systems at Kampala Capital City Authority.

Among the milestones that NITA Uganda boasts of having achieved in the past decade include the total of 3000 km of optical fibre laid, 4 National Border posts connected, State of the art tier 3 National Data Centre, 390 Services online, National Disaster Recovery Centre, National CERT, and an E-citizens portal in existence.
