Transforming Government since 2001

The Belgian parliament has approved legislation on electronic identification

The new law is aimed at making it easier for the public to contact public authorities and access e-government services, reports TelecomPaper.

The law also implements the eiDAS regulation on facilitating cross-border access to public services in the EU.

Belgians already use their eID card to log into public services.

The new law aims to make easier to use alternative systems such as mobile phones and digital keys developed by the private sector, based on minimum security standards.

In January, the government approved previous legislation aimed at improving electronic communication over smartphones.

Digital Agenda minister Alexander De Croo, who proposed the legislation on electronic authentication systems, said the aim is to take advantage of the many private authentication systems already available or in development, rather than imposing a state designed system. Currently the state relies on the eID system, which often requires end-users to purchase an electronic reader for their national ID card in order to access public services online.
