A survey published by the Federal Government's General Directorate of Statistics and Economic Information reveals that almost a fifth of all Belgians have never used a computer.
The survey also found that a staggering 2.6 million Belgians (a quarter of the population) had never used the internet.
As expected the research turned up big differences in levels of computer use between young people and senior citizens.
Two thirds of the over-55's have never used the internet.
However, the gap is narrowing as more and more older people purchase computers and go on-line.
The digital divide is most pronounced between those in work and those who are not part of the active population.
According to the survey four out of ten unemployed people are yet to make their first trip into cyberspace.
Of those who do use the internet, only one in five every make use or e-commerce of e-government facilities.
