Vietnam’s Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Thien Nhan has said that high levels of determination and agreement among government agencies are key to making e-government a reality in the fast-growing Southeast Asian country.

Addressing delegates at the Vietnam e-Government Symposium in Ho Chi Minh City, Nhan said that the focus has, and will continue to be, on applied information and communication technology (ICT) to build up electronic portals and enhance government agencies’ administration in serving people and entrepreneurs over the next decade.

He noted that several applied-ICT initiatives have led to positive results in key cities including Hanoi, Da Nang and Ho Chi Minh city, but this was happening on a limited scale.

IT experts and representatives from more than 40 provincial telecommunications departments at the symposium discussed ways to make e-government a reality, including choosing appropriate IT solutions and starting small-scale projects to mitigate the risk of failure.

Last year, Vietnam was ranked 91st among 192 countries in the United Nations’ e-government rankings.
