The Ministry of Trade and Industry announced yesterday the official launch of eCoSys, a system designed to grant and manage certificates of origin (C/O) online at the website www.ecvn.com.

The launching ceremony was attended by representatives of the ministry, the Vietnam Chamber of Commerce and Industry (VCCI), the E-Commercial Business Association, and other private businesses.

Under the system, exporters in Vietnam would apply for C/O for their products from the ministry through the Internet instead of the mail, said the ministry.

C/O are legal documents establishing the country of origin of a given product.

Deputy Minister Le Danh Vinh says the move complies with the e-government master plan for 2006-2010 and federal law on C/O.

The new system will not only save money and time for exporters but also improve state management by reducing bureaucracy, thus helping to achieve the country's export growth target set by the government, Vinh said.

The deputy minister added that eCoSys, which was designed to monitor the country's quota of garment exports to the US, will benefit the ministry by being able to share information about trade and C/O with its counterparts in ASEAN member nations whose governments plan to enter the ASEAN Free Trade Area by 2015.
