Transforming Government since 2001
The Ho Chi Minh City's Post and Telecommunications Department on Mar. 16 officially launched a broadband as the server for the e-government and a business portal at the website www.hcmcportal.com.vn.

At a conference on applying information technology (IT) advances and developing telecommunications infrastructure, the IT industry and IT human resources held at the HCM City's Opera House, the department also introduced its "one door" system for businesses.

A series of projects and supporting policies will be implemented in 2007 in a bid to help IT businesses benefit from development opportunities, in addition to technical infrastructure development programmes in service of e-commerce, said the department's director Le Manh Ha at the conference.

Attention will be paid to e-commercial supporting services for sectors relating to public transaction like on-line services, e-customs, licence granting and business registering through the Internet, Ha added.

The conference drew leaders of nearly 40 posts and telecommunications departments nationwide and 250 representatives from IT businesses, universities and research institutes.

HCM City is currently home to 5,632 IT businesses with a combined registered capital of more than VND 14.8 trillion ($925 million), according to the department. These businesses posted a turnover of over $764 million in 2006.

In 2007, the number of subscribers to landlines in the city is forecast to reach 1.55 million; to mobile phone, 7 million; and to the Internet, 600,000.

The average growth rate of hardware is expected to increase 60 percent to $782 million in revenue this year while software and services should increase 25 percent to $141 million.
