Transforming Government since 2001
Government is considering significant scale up of its budget allocation for the Information Communication Technology (ICT) sector in next year's Financial Budget and Fiscal Policy.

The Minister for Education, Ambassador Lee Ocran, who announced this said increase in budgetary allocations will enable government to pursue vigorous ICT education and learning in schools across the country, and ensure the country becomes an ICT hub for the sub-region.

He said the move will deepen Ghana's leadership role on the continent in technological advancement and ICT use and applications. "Already, many countries around us have started emulating our one-laptop-per child programme", he remarked.

The Minister was speaking at Koforidua in the Eastern Region, where he officially handed over the first consignment of 5,500 Better Ghana Laptops to basic schools in the Region.

Under the Basic School Computerization Project 60,000 laptops are to be supplied to all basic schools in the country to promote computer literacy and ICT education. The remaining 100 are expected to be delivered in the next few weeks.

The laptops were locally assembled by Rlg Communications Limited under a partnership agreement between the company and the Ministry of Education.

The ceremony was attended by the 21 District Chief Executives in the Region, Municipal and District Directors of Education as well as pupils from some basic schools.

He said aside making ICT learning examinable in schools, government is also working very hard to ensure every teacher gets a laptop to aid research and teaching.

He told the gathering government will do all within its ambit to promote education at all level in order to attain quality.

Eastern Regional Minister, Ambassador Victor Smith commended the Education Ministry for the gesture and expressed the hope it would improve standards and quality of education in the region.

He took a swipe at critics of the NDC government saying "they refuse to see all the positive things government is doing. I don't know about elsewhere but here in the Eastern Region, it is doing wonders".

The Corporate Affairs Manager of rlg Communications Limited, Mr. Emmanuel J.K Arthur asked schools authorities to ensure strict adherence to safety and care rules on the laptops to ensure a longer lifespan.

He said as an indigenous firm, rlg will continue to partner government to improve lives, environment and learning, using ICT as the main vehicle. He assured the laptops were both child and environmental friendly.
