The Vice Chancellor of the University of Ghana, Professor Ernest Aryeetey, has pledged the commitment of the university authorities to commit more funds towards the teaching and research in science-related studies.

This, he explained, is as a result of the increasing role science education and technology is playing in shaping the global economy as the country positions itself as an ICT-driven economy.

“Ghana is committed to having an ICT-driven economy, and for this to be fully achieved requires high skill training of students in such fields and computer engineering is well-placed in the University of Ghana to provide the leadership role.

“Towards this end, the University will beginning next academic year in August set aside US$2million for procuring equipment to enhance science education in the country’s premier university,” he said.

Professor Aryeetey said this in Accra when Huawei Technologies handed over a multi-purpose ICT-lab to the University’s newly-created Faculty of Engineering Sciences.

The ICT-lab, which is the third to be constructed by the Chinese technology products and solutions provider, follows similar facilities provided to the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology and the University of Cape-Coast.

The lab is well-equipped with 40 computers, routers, switches, firewall software, a projector, one 6.0 kVA UPS and 18 computer desks and 45 chairs.

Additionally, Huawei has also provided Local Area Network (LAN) for the laboratory which adds to 2km of 48-core single mode fibre to provide Internet connectivity.

The Deputy Manager of Huawei Technologies, Daniel Guo Zhi, said the construction of ICT-labs for the country’s major universities is in fulfillment of a promise the company made to the President, John Atta-Mills, when he visited the firm’s head-office in Shenzhen, China, a couple of years ago.

He said this also ties into the company’s idea to enrich people’s lives through communication.

“At Huawei, we believe in education and proper training. That is why we are donating this ICT laboratory to provide adequate, relevant and practical training that will help the students in the Faculty acquire the necessary knowledge in their areas of specification,” he said.

Mr. Zhi added that the company will hence enhance its cooperation with the University of Ghana to enable students acquire hands-on experience in computing through internships and national service schemes.
