Transforming Government since 2001
The Koforidua Senior High School, also known as KOSEC, in the Eastern Region, has led the way forward, in electronic voting during student elections held there.

This was made known by the Headmistress, Mrs. Matilda R. Appiah, at the school's 20th Anniversary celebration, which was under the theme, 'Maintaining Our Academic and Social Record in the face of Daunting Challenges,' over the weekend in Koforidua.

Apart from the school, arguably the first institution in the country to introduce biometric voting, the Headmistress stressed that the students of the school also access their terminal reports via the internet.

Innovation and technology, which have improved the academic and social outlook of the school, was made possible, according to Mrs. Appiah, by the Computer Department.

She explained that the Computer Department had established a data processing unit, with each student being given an identification number, which helps them access their reports during internal and external examinations.

Touching on the theme of the celebration, the Eastern Regional Minister, Mr. Akwasi Akyem Appea-Kubi, stated that the theme was very apt and appropriate, because the school was deviled with challenges, but not withstanding this, had made academic progress.

According to him, education was the key to development, and quality education for that matter, was an invaluable asset to the individual, community, and nation, adding that the country's growth and sustenance of development depends on the development of its human population, through the provision of quality education.

He took advantage of the occasion to urge the gathering to assist the Electoral Commission towards the preparation of the biometric registration exercise, and the smooth running of the presidential and legislative elections. He affirmed the government's commitment towards free, fair and transparent elections.

The Chief Executive Officer of the Millennium Development Authority Mr. Martin Eson-Benjamin, who was also the Guest Speaker, on his part, stressed that education was not a privilege, but the right of every Ghanaian citizen.

According to him, education was a basic human right that frees the spirit from the chains of ignorance, and empowers the individual to achieve goals. He called for the prioritisation and provision of education to all, since no country succeeds without investing in education.
