Transforming Government since 2001
Telecom operators in Pakistan has finally agreed not to sell any SIM without biometric verification 1st August, 2014. National Database and Registration Authority will facilitate the biometric verification process under a deal finalized with the government on Friday. NADRA has signed formal agreement with cellular companies in this regard.

The new arrangement, proposed couple of years ago will help government improve overall security situation of the country as use often illegal SIMs are used in terror related activities. Fearing a drop in sales, cellular companies were resisting the proposal.

Under new arrangement, cellular operators will be liable to procure and deploy biometric machines on their franchises and retail outlets while NADRA will charge Rs10 for each verification.

“Biometric-based SIM verification will provide better technological support to law enforcement agencies, thus improving security in the country,” interior minister Chaudhary Nisar Ali Khan said while talking to media.
