“The operators have agreed to meet the deadline and the foolproof biometric system will be in place at their outlets by the end of next month,” a PTA spokesman said.
According to the new system a Mobile SIM can only be obtained after providing a thumb impression and after subsequent verification of credentials by National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA).
Installation of new system at around 75,000 retail outlets across country would cost about Rs2.8 billion.
Under existing system, a customer has to make a call to 789 using newly subscribed SIM and answer a few questions like mother’s maiden name and the place of birth to get the SIM activated. PTA announced that 789 service will remain available even after installation of the biometric verification system.
All cellular companies have claimed that they are ready to launch the biometric system by the deadline given by PTA.
