The Home Affairs Ministry is now on a track to install a Wide-Area Network (WAN) and become a digitally-connected entity under the e-Government framework once the work to upgrade and install Local Area Network (LAN) in all respective locations is completed.

The scope of work to install LAN networks includes all departments under the ministry, including district-level branches throughout the country.

It was estimated that about 2,000 networks points will be installed in 86 identified localities.

The project will connect the ministry and its departments with the e-Government Data Centre in Gadong and ultimately with other government agencies.

The Home Affairs Ministry is comprised of several departments and localities throughout the country, including District Offices.

The Borneo Bulletin learnt this during the signing of the contract with Azure Technologies, a private company that will be doing the upgrade and installation of Local Area Network infrastructure in several parts or localities under the Home Affairs Ministry.

The ceremony also saw the signing of a contract with McHouse Interior Decor Sdn Bhd, a private company that will renovate and modify the ground and first floors of the ministry's Information Technology Service Centre.

The projects to supply, transport, install, upgrade, configure commission the new and existing network is valued at $1,000,000 and is expected to take nine months to complete. This includes a three-year maintenance term and one-year warranty period.

Whereas, the renovation project is valued at $987,974 and is scheduled to be completed in six months, including three-year maintenance term and one-year warranty period.

This renovation will include the establishment of a technology information centre that will house an IT training room for staff and officers.

The centre is expected to accommodate 36 people, including a help desk for both the staff and the public once the whole e-Government projects are set and ready, including e-Licence; e-Tax, e-Building, e-Kampung, Electronic Labour Exchange, Labour Control System and several other projects.

Signing on behalf of the Ministry of Home Affairs were Dato Paduka Awg Sa Bali bin Abas, Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Home Affairs, and Awg Hj Ali bin Hj Mohd Yusof, Senior Special Duties Officer at the Ministry of Home Affairs.

While signing for Azure Technologies were Awg Hj Matussin bin Awg Hj Ahmad, Director of Azure Technologies, and Awg Yew Hong Chong, Manager of Azure Technologies.

Meanwhile, McHouse Interior Decor Sdn Bhd was represented by Sharifah Masani bte Wan Alwi, Director of McHouse Interior Decor, and Shawn Cassidy Narcis, Sales and Marketing Executive.

Awg Hj Ali, Senior Special Duties Officer at the Ministry of Home Affairs said a Wide-Area Network (WAN) will be made through e-Bandwidth that will be carried out by Telbru Sdn Bhd after the LANs are completed in all respective locations.

He said with the infrastructure in place, it will speed up communication as well as increase interaction between staff and officers.

Besides that, both projects will put in place network infrastructure and related facilities that will become key to the implementation of e-Government service system for the Ministry of Home Affairs and facilitate the "System roll-out" for "flagship" e-Government systems, including Government Employees Management System (GEMS), Civil Service e-Learning Services and Business Licensing System (BLS).
