A group of government officials recently visited Oman and Bahrain to share experiences with their counterparts on the implementation of e-government initiatives.

Led by Deputy Minister at the Prime Minister's Office and E-Government Leadership Forum (EGLF) Dato Seri Paduka Eussoff Agaki bin Haji Ismail, the delegation also comprised Deputy Permanent Secretary (IT and E-Government) at the Prime Minister's Office Awang Abdul Mutalib bin POKS SDP Haji Mohd Yusof and other senior officials from the Prime Minister's Office, the E-Government National Centre (EGNC) and the Authority for Info-Communications Technology Industry (AITI).

Among the highlights of the visit, from April 26-30, were: a close look at the Civil Status System, a database system for civil register that includes data on births, deaths, marriages and data on identity cards for Omanis and other residents in Oman; an insight into the set-up, background, functions, operations and future policy plans of Oman's Information Technology Authority (ITA) and Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA) with respect to coordination of developments in the ICT or telecommunication industry and e-government in Oman.

The delegation also had the opportunity to learn the latest innovations and developments in IT and e-government initiatives from participating Gulf Cooperation Countries (GCC) through the Comex 2010 Expo, hosted by the ITA from April 26-30.

In Bahrain, the delegation had discussions with Bahrain's E-Government Authority (EGA) on strategies for collaborative efforts with international organisations like the United Nations, strategic partnership with the private sector with respect to developing the e-government initiative in Bahrain, and strategies in attaining high world rankings in the e-government development.

The officials also gained insights into the EGA's strategic approach in integrating the ministries and governmental entities with respect to e-government implementation, policies on technical enterprise architecture, business processes improvement (re-engineering) and change management initiative by the EGA, and the institutional framework to unify policies, procedures and principles aligned to Bahrain's E-Government Strategic Plan and its Bahrain Vision 2030.

Meanwhile, the working visits were organised by the ITA of Oman and the EGA of Bahrain respectively.
