Brunei Darussalam has been ranked 63rd out of 133 countries in the Networked Readiness Index (NRI) of the World Economic Forum’s (WEF) Global Information Technology Report 2009-2010.

The report highlights the key role of ICT as an enabler of a more economically, environmentally and socially sustainable world.

This is Brunei’s second entry into the report and this time a rise has been seen under the “Readiness” category, where it was given the overall rank of 5155, with Business Readiness rising from 67th to 37th and Government Readiness rising from 45th to 29th, though Individual Readiness has fallen from 40th to 76th.

Sweden came out ranked 1st for the first time in the NRI as the world’s most networked economy in the report, with Singapore (2nd) and Denmark (3rd) following very closely behind.

The rest of the top 10 comprised Switzerland, USA, Finland, Canada, Hong Kong, Netherlands and Norway. China (37th) and India (43rd) led BRIC economies and continued an upward trend with a nine and 11-place improvement respectively.

Singapore was the highest placed Asian and Asean country, while the other Asean countries also on the list included Malaysia (27th”), Thailand (47th), Vietnam (54th), Brunei Darussalam (63rd), Indonesia (67th), Philippines (85th) and Cambodia (117th).

According to information from the report’s website, “The Global Information Technology Report 2009-2010 is the ninth in the series, and measures the extent to which 133 economies from both the developed and developing worlds leverage ICT advances for increased growth and development through the methodological framework of the Networked Readiness Index.”

“The NRI identifies the most relevant factors facilitating ICT readiness, providing policymakers, business leaders, and all other relevant stakeholders with a unique tool in drawing national roadmaps towards increased networked readiness, one that they can use to benchmark their country’s performance over time and vis-à-vis other economies.”

According to the website, the report with its extensive coverage of 133 economies worldwide, remains the world’s most comprehensive and authoritative international assessment of the impact of ICT on the development process and the competitiveness of nations.

The report is produced by the World Economic Forum in cooperation with leading international business school INSEAD, within the framework of the World Economic Forum’s Global Competitiveness Network and the Industry Partnership Programme for Information Technology and Telecommunications Industry.
