As Part of its e-governance drive, the government has allocated $5.4 million for the implementation of 'Project InTeL' involving 38 religious schools in the country, which will be equipped with computer labs facilitated with tablet PCs.

The project was conceived through an, e-government project contract in 2002 when the Department of Islamic Studies was still under the Ministry of Education. The project is jointly completed by Alif Technologies Company.

A total number of 42 InTeL computer labs have been set up in religious educational institutions such as the religious colleges, Arab schools and religious schools.

Yesterday, the implementation of the the Project InTeL was inked between the Department of Islamic Studies and Alif Technologies company. The company will be involved in areas such as supplying, analysing, training, maintenance of software for the implementation of an Integrated Interactive Teaching and Learning System (InTeL) for the Ministry of Religious Affairs.

Dato Paduka Ishaaq Abdullah, Acting Permanent Secretary, the guest of honour at the ceremony, confirmed the agreement between Ustazah Kasmah Siput, the Director of the. Department of Islamic Studies and Abu Bakar Mohd Don with representatives from Alif Technologies, Pg Mohammad Pg Kamaluddin, the Chairman and Head Executive Officer alongside Kumar Guru. The ceremony included a briefing on the `Project InTeL' presented by Husny Abang Taha, the IT coordinator, e-Government Project of the Department of Islamic Studies under the Ministry of Religious Affairs.

In an exclusive interview with The Brunei Times, Husny Abang Taha said "Once the plan is settled'for each selected school will be equipped with a computer lab fitted with tablet PC."

He said that a tablet PC is able to recognise handwriting and enables it to be applied to a Windows set program. He added that the tablet PC maybe the first mobile computer that is able to recognise handwriting text. "The tablet PCs can store 'jawi' handwriting, used in religious schools, in the system, which can be retrieved it whenever needed," he added.

Each teacher who will be made in charge of the lab will also be trained.

"We hope the computer labs would help improve and encourage creativity among the religious teachers and give them an opportunity of using information technology," he added

He added that the usage of the system would be accessed in 60 days after the signing ceremony.

"We are thankful to His Majesty's government for allocating finances to implement the project and we will continue planning and take every opportunity to develop this project further," he added.
