Transforming Government since 2001
The Philippines has launched a central database to help local government units benchmark themselves on how effective they have been in managing their marine areas. P

The country has over 1800 marine protected areas and majority of them are under the jurisdiction of local government units. These regulated areas include marine parks, marine reserves and landscapes where certain activities such as fishing are not allowed.

Local officials can complete a self-assessment form and submit additional documents to evaluate their current practices. The tool is developed by the Coastal Conservation and Education Foundation, a non-profit Philippine organisation to manage coastal habitats.

A system to store and share data across the national government, local government units and institutions can also help improve the management and enforcement of these protected areas, according to the University of The Philippines’ Marine Science Institute, which has launched this online database.

The public can search for marine areas by location and view information about each site, including size, location, current and historical monitoring data and management effectiveness.
