DOST Undersecretary and Information and Communications Technology Office executive director Louis Napoleon Casambre said a network that can link 160 government offices in Metro Manila will be operational in a few weeks.
The DOST added a similar fiber optic network that can connect 22 government offices is already operational in Cebu.
"Government operations can expect a significant improvement in their operations and the delivery of their services with the use of fiber optic technology and systems currently being developed under the Integrated Government Philippines (iGovPhil) project of the Information and Communications Technology Office (ICT Office) and the Advanced Science and Technology Institute (ASTI) of the DOST," the DOST said.
Casambre said fiber optic technology will facilitate necessary services like cloud computing, data center co-location, web hosting, document and records management, email and online security.
He noted cloud computing will be impossible without broadband connectivity that fiber optics provides.
On the other hand, Casambre said the iGovPhil project itself consists of several projects considered the building blocks in the establishment of an e-government.
Most services offered by iGovPhil include government website hosting, email, cloud, online payment system, public key infrastructure, archives and records management system, and project management system, and are launched from data centers.
The fiber optic network will be launched at the National Science and Technology Week from July 24 to 28 at the SMX Convention Center in Pasay City.
Expected to attend are scientists, researchers, inventors, innovators, industry players, academicians, students, and science and technology enthusiasts.
The event is open to the public, and more information can be found at the event’s official website nstw.dost.gov.ph.
