The solon reiterated this advocacy during the inauguration of three two-classroom school buildings in Talibon town last week.
He said the Aquino administration and Congress are moving in the same direction by providing about P138 billion for the Department of Education (DepEd) in the 2012 national budget.
Both are also pushing for the passage of laws increasing the “sin” taxes on tobacco products and liquor to generate more funds for education and the universal PhilHealth coverage for all Filipinos.
Aumentado authored the bills hiking the sin taxes by 10 percent annually for five years, while the administration bill authored by Rep. Joseph Emilio Abaya (1st District, Cavite) increases the taxes thereon by 60 percent by way of a specific excise tax. The measures are now tackled by the committee on ways and means of which the Boholano solon is the ranking minority member.
Aumentado also disclosed that he is willing to have his bills subsumed or consolidated with the administration measure because the latter could raise more funds for the government, provided, a big percentage shall be earmarked for more school buildings, teachers, computers, internet and other modern teaching tools for the public schools, colleges and universities, as well as for the universal PhilHealth coverage especially of needy people and barangay officials.
The solon inaugurated the Ponciana E. Leoligao High School in barangay San Francisco, the Santo Niño Elementary School (ES) and the San Roque ES, all in Talibon town. He was accompanied by former Board Member Isabelito Tongco, Mayor Restituto Auxtero, Supervisor Joel Duavis, Principal Emmanuel Trasponte and barangay officials.
The inauguration of the San Roque ES two-classroom building was done against the backdrop of the three-classroom school building ruins – gutted by fire due to electrical short circuit.
