Voter’s identification cards (IDs) will not be released in the barangays and neither will these be mailed, said an official of the Commission on Elections (Comelec).

Comelec Spokesperson James Jimenez issued the statement so as to guide those who may think otherwise.

“Where you applied for the ID is where you should go. The ID is also not released in the barangay. Many are saying that the barangays are where you will collect your ID. This is not true,” he said in Pilipino during a television interview.

Jimenez said if a voter wants to check if his ID is already available or not, he should go to the nearest Comelec office.

“If you applied for the ID, say two years ago, you may go to the nearest Comelec office and chances are it’s already there. If you still fail to get your ID, inform the election officer about it. There may be something missing or incorrect in your application. The election officer will help you get your ID,” he said.

The poll official also stressed the importance of personally claiming one’s voter’s ID.

“It’s better to go to the Comelec office to personally claim your ID,” Jimenez said.

“It’s not only because the ID is needed for voting purposes. The ID can also be used for many other purposes since it’s a government ID. It’s similar to a driver’s license. It’s a pity if your ID falls into the wrong hands. So it’s better for security reason to get your ID yourself in the Comelec office,” he added.

Earlier, the Comelec revealed that it had already distributed around 25 million voter’s ID so far.

“These are the voters who are already covered by biometrics. Distribution of IDs is still ongoing,” Comelec Commissioner Rene Sarmiento said.

He said by 2013, the Comelec may be able to release some 35 million voter’s IDs, more than half of the 52 million registered voters in the May 2010 polls.
