The Commission on Elections (Comelec) in Cagayan de Oro City confirmed Friday that its office in Manila has stopped printing voter's identification cards since 2005 until 2010.

City Comelec Election Officer II Ona dela Rosa said the last batch of voter's identification cards they distributed and turned over to different barangays were the 2003 IDs.

"We have no idea as to when Comelec Manila would resume the printing of new IDs. We just have to wait for any memorandum," dela Rosa said.

She also said that majority of the 2007 registered voters will not get their voter's ID, particularly those who had their registration at the Amphitheater because their biometrics have not been taken.

Data from Comelec Manila showed that only around half of the 45 million voters had their biometrics taken.

"Those who have registered in 2007 but have not taken their biometrics won't expect they would be given their IDs. But they should visit the Comelec office for validation," dela Rosa said.

At the same time, she is also appealing to those who have paid for the replacement of their lost voter's IDs to wait because only Comelec Manila can address this problem.

The Comelec has suspended the printing of voters' identification cards to give way to the computerized system of registration.

In a resolution, the poll body said the printing would resume after the records of 50 million registered voters have gone through the Automated Fingerprint Identification System (Afis).

Under the Afis project, the Comelec uses data capturing machines to get the photographs, fingerprints and signatures of voters.

In recommending the stoppage of printing, the poll body cited that there has been no supply of paper for printing since October 2008.
