In an interview, Marikina mayor Maridess Fernando said the P12-million project went operational last month.
The project is designed to deliver, among others, e-learning and healthcare applications. A video presentation of the WAN project can be found at the Marikina website.
"It's a continuing project implemented in different stages. We are deploying our own healthcare system right now," Fernando said.
"The project basically has three components: e-government, e-learning and e-healthcare," she added.
Mayor Fernando said third-party application developers were contracted by the city government.
Marikina claims to be the first local government using wireless connectivity. The network, which makes use of equipment from Motorola, connects 16 barangays (villages).
The initiative also includes setting up a control facility to monitor key areas through real-time video feeds from IP-enabled cameras.
