“It is very disturbing that the country has again declined in rankings in yet another major global ICT report,” Dr Wheatley said Monday.
?He explained that the UN e-Government survey is a benchmarking report that demonstrates the state of affairs in Governments' ICT strategies and reforms.
"Here again we see evidence of the government’s poor performance and planning in the ICT sector. Especially at a time when the country is looking to boost investment in the ICT sector, this does not create a good impression for would-be investors. This is bad news for Jamaica given the sector's potential to generate jobs, facilitate entrepreneurship, and generate growth nationally,” Dr Wheatley said.
"This decline, coming on the heels of an 11-point decline in the World Economic Forum’s Global Information Technology Report, clearly shows that the Ministers responsible for this area, and the Government in general, have not placed sufficient emphasis on the importance of ICT as an enabler of economic growth and socio-economic transformation across Jamaica,” he added.
"The Government must now stop dragging its feet and implement the necessary ICT reforms, including new legislation placing ICT at the forefront of our development objectives and the national growth agenda,” Dr Wheatley insisted.
