Tagged Delivering Nigeria's Identity Management System Infrastructure, the conference will share global best practices in developing national identity management systems among country officials, and highlight how an appreciation of identity management can make for better business strategies to the benefit of the whole economy.
The conference is structured as plenary sessions focusing on sub themes that include legal and regulatory frameworks for the identity sector, the value of digital ID to the economy, how security documents will change tomorrow's world and the experiences of countries with functional and successful ID management system infrastructure.
Scheduled to hold from September 21-23, at the Congress Hall of Transcorp Hilton in Abuja, the conference is part of an "ongoing process to harness worldwide example of best practices, stimulate involvement of the public and private sectors and continually re-affirm the priorities for the implementation of an effective Nigerian Identity management system."
The conference is also part of NIMC's efforts to "implant a dependable identity assurance system that meets current and future needs of all sectors of the Nigerian economy."
In a press statement signed by Ben Alofoje, secretary of the planning committee, the NIMC conference will serve to demonstrate how an upgraded identity infrastructure will help to transform services in the public and private sector institutions and enable them to become more efficient. It will usher in the much talked about e-government and also enable Law Enforcement Agencies (LEAs) to fight crime while reducing crime that is enabled by identity fraud
NIMC which was established by ACT No. 23 of 2007 with the primary responsibility of creating and maintaining a national identity management system infrastructure that will ensure that individuals are able to prove or assert their identity in a dependable manner anywhere in Nigeria, recently took over the assets and liabilities of the defunct Department of National Civic Registration (DNRC) and is currently finalising arrangements for the implementation of an upgrade programme in collaboration with the private sector.
The conference will feature foreign and local speakers from the private sector, Security agencies, financial institutions, and the identity sector informational technology sector and top government functionaries.
