Governor Adams Oshiomhole of Edo State, on Friday, launched the state’s citizen identity card project with a pledge that it will not lead to loss of jobs as being misconstrued.

Oshiomhole described the project as another step towards qualitative development of the state and its inhabitants, just as he said it would enable government plan properly.

According to him, the project was aimed at capturing specific groups like women, the aged, the physically challenged, among others, so that government can plan better, especially in the provision of medical care.

Nigerians were excited last month, following the release of telecom subscriber number by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), which put the figure at over 70 million for both fixed and mobile subscribers.

Although there is reason to celebrate the rapid increase in subscriber number, there is also the need to sustain such growing number on one hand, and to bridge the gap between telecom subscriber growth and broadband penetration on the other hand.

ICT experts are concerned about Nigeria’s disinterest in the Internet.

Speaking at the annual Digital Sense Africa Forum held in Lagos during 17-18 April, Ibukun Odusote, former chairperson of the Presidential Inter-Ministerial Committee on the World Summit on Information Society (WSIS) and Permanent Secretary, Nigeria Ecological Fund said the country needs massive, cheap high speed Internet to further progress and improve the country’s access to connectivity.

Information Technology (IT) experts have said that the nation’s economy would be widely driven by e-business if government, corporate bodies and individuals adopt electronic form of business at all levels.

The IT experts, who spoke at a gathering in Lagos weekend for the e-Business (Internet Technology-driven Business) conference organised by the Nigerian Internet Group (NIG), called on Nigerians to give priority to e-business solution because of its potential in driving business and the economy.

In technical parlance, e-business is an electronic form of business that is carried out in cyberspace, using the Internet platform. It covers all forms of electronic transactions such as e-government, e-health, e-education, e-commerce, e-banking, among others.

The Lagos State Government has said that its Statewide Information Technology programme, known as the Global Computerization Project (GCP) of the current administration was initiated to benefit the workforce.

Commissioner for Science and Technology, Dr. Kadiri Obafemi Hamzat made this disclosure at the weekend, at a one day roundtable on Internet Governance Forum (IGF) preparation for the country organized by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) and Digital Sense Africa (DSA) in Lagos.
