This year's overall winner of the Irish eGovernment Awards 2005 is the Land Registry Office.

The LRO completes 3,300 business transactions per day online.

The vast bulk of the Land Registry's business has moved online leading to 769,000-paid transactions last year. Since the online service was launched a total of more than 2 million paid transactions have been carried out.

The Land Registry Office, which has successfully migrated 80 percent of its business online, was crowned overall winner of the Irish eGovernment Awards 2005.

The governmental department was awarded the prize in recognition of its success in utilising electronic services. The Land Registry Office now completes 3,300 business transactions per day via its website. In 2004 the government department's site completed 769,000 transactions via the site and has seen more than 2 million paid transactions carried out since it was first launched. The Land Registry Office also picked up a "Best Central eGovernment" honour at the awards.

A lack of public confidence in e-voting means that the Government may be forced into writing off its EUR50 million investment in electronic ballot systems.

According to a report in the Irish Times, Michael Noonan, chairman of the Dail Public Accounts Committee, said that he doubted whether the current system would ever be introduced following the debacle last year where plans to initiate e-voting were scrapped over security concerns.

Members of the Oireachtas will now be able to access the internet while strolling around the Leinster House campus thanks to a newly launched wireless LAN.

The wireless local area network (LAN), an initiative of the Department of Communications, Marine and Natural Resources in conjunction with the Houses of the Oireachtas Commission and Siemens Business Services, was launched on Monday by the Communications Minister, Noel Dempsey. The network will be introduced on a phased basis and will initially provide members of the Oireachtas with a high-speed wireless internet access.

At a ceremony in Dublin on Thursday, six Irish public sector bodies were recognised for their outstanding work in e-government over the last year.

The Eircom-sponsored event, called the "Innovation Through Technology Awards," was run by Inside Government magazine, a publication that caters to civil servants and public sector employees. The event marked the first year of awards and included a keynote address from Taoiseach Bertie Ahern and closing remarks from Eircom CEO Dr. Philip Nolan.
