A group of ICT experts, including those from the Institute for Information Industry (III), visited Oman to explore avenues for joint venture and other forms of cooperation. They held a "Taiwan Smart ICT to Go" workshop and a partnership or match-making event in the city recently.
Talking to the Times of Oman, Meili Hsiao, director general of the III, said that the interaction with the public sector organisations and Omani entrepreneurs revealed ample opportunities for partnerships in the ICT sector between the two countries.
"The partnership in such areas is always a two-way route when both sides benefit in terms of knowledge and material," she said.
"This was my first visit which has paved the way for future tours to interact with Omani public and private sector for cooperation in the ICT sector. Oman is a wonderful country and has a considerable potential to be the regional leader in the sector," said Meili Hsiao.
"We have met people from various organisations in Oman and are now expecting them to visit Computex, one of the largest ICT fair of the world held annually in Taiwan," she said.
Meili Hsiao visited Oman along with others from the III, a non-governmental organisation established in 1979. The institute is jointly sponsored by the Taiwan government and prominent private enterprises, for the purpose of strengthening the developments of information industry in Taiwan.
Alferd Lien, senior programme manager of III, said that the institute was already working with the Kuwaiti public and private sector organisations in the area of ICT.
"This experience in Kuwait has encouraged the institute to explore partnership in Oman as it's another partner in the region," he said.
He said that the institute was willing to partner with Omani public sector organisations in e-government services with better services and solutions. Oman's telecare and health sector, smart energy management and saving solutions, smart greenhouse for growing better food, studyfun, a solution for making classroom much fun are some of the areas for potential partnership and cooperation.
Yeong Shoiu Hsiao, project consultant of III, said that Oman and Taiwan have many similarities. They can grow together in many areas, particularly in the ICT domain.
"Taiwan has been one of the market leaders in terms of mobile and tablet technology. It provides good e-governance to its citizens and believes in sharing the experience," he said.
